L-Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid.

Under certain conditions, such as older age, illness or physical activity, especially during training and competition, L-arginine can quickly become essential - i.e. no longer produced in sufficient quantities by the body itself. It can therefore be important and helpful to additionally supply L-arginine from outside to ensure the body's supply of this important amino acid. L-arginine used to be listed as a non-essential amino acid, but is now referred to as semi-essential because of its importance.

L-Arginine is also the only amino acid that contains two nitrogen atoms. L- Arginine is important for the formation of nitric oxide in the body. Numerous studies have shown that nitric oxide dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. If there is not enough arginine available, circulatory problems, high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction can occur.
